Choosing the Right Ingredients for Your Holiday Potpourri

Since potpourri is so easy to make, you can play around with the ingredients you use to your heart’s content until you achieve the fragrance you’re after! Of course, there are some staples when it comes to holiday scents, so here is a list of ingredients that would be perfect to mix and match for your holiday potpourri!

Fresh or Dried fruits such as apples, oranges, clementines, lemons, and cranberries.

Herbs such as rosemary, pine, or bay leaves

Spices (often unpowdered) such as cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, and star anise.

Seasonal touches like pinecones or flower petals.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, either place around the house (if dried) to add a subtle scent to the space or place in a pot of water and simmer while the scents envelope your home!

If, however, you prefer to stick to a standard recipe, here is one that offers easy instructions as well courtesy of A Hundred Affections

Ingredients

  • 2-3 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of cranberries (more if you want)
  • 2 clementines
  • 1 tbsp of whole cloves
  • 1/4 tsp of nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp of allspice
  • 1/4 of ginger
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 -3 sprigs of fresh pine or rosemary
  • 1 tsp vanilla (optional)
  • handful of dried orange slices (see below for how to make or buy)
  • handful of small pine cones
  • handful of whole cinnamon sticks
  • half-dozen star anise

Directions

  1. Cut the clementines in slices and break the cinnamon sticks (to release the scent).
  2. Pour everything in the sauce pan, add water to cover the mixture, give it a mix, and simmer on low.

Make the Perfect Gift with this Holiday Potpourri!

It can be incredibly easy to prepare some potpourri so that is can be delivered as an adorable little gift! Once you’ve decided on your ingredients, you also have to decide which method you wish your recipients to use with their gift.

If you are opting for the fresh ingredients, placing them in sealed jars with instructions is the perfect way to package your homemade present for Christmas! This is especially convenient and useful for those that live close and for presents that will be gifted in-person, so that the ingredients can be used as soon as possible and prevent spoilage.

If, however, your recipients live far away, have no fear! You can still send them these seasonal scents made with love! If the potpourri is not going to be used immediately, or you think your recipients would prefer to place their potpourri in their home rather than simmer over the stove, sending dried ingredients is the best method!

To dehydrate your ingredients, you can simply use a dehydrator or even your oven with hardly any effort. If you use an oven, you can use this guide to know exactly how to achieve the perfect dried fruit for your homemade potpourri! Aside from this, you can easily place your ingredients in adorable sachets to send them off to your loved ones!
