Well, it may be because our romanticized expectations overshadow the reality of the real world, or because we don’t properly relish in the spectacularness of the season. Focusing on the former sounds like removing our amber-colored glasses, which isn’t very festive, so instead, let’s explore the 10 best things to do to make this fall a memorable one!

It’s not often that many of us in the South get to enjoy the outdoors without being wrapped in a blanket of humidity and mosquitoes. And while this is still true during the fall season, it is considerably less distracting than in the spring and summer. What better way to get into the festive spirit of fall than to take a trip to the pumpkin patch? Bask in the crisp fall air as you stroll through a field of autumnal gourds with friends and family. Not only is it the perfect start to an evening of creative pumpkin carving, but it’s a fun photo op as well!
For those local to the Birmingham area, there are a few pumpkin patches nearby to plan a visit to before the season ends. The Great Pumpkin Patch in Hayden, Alabama offers a lot more festive fun than just the pumpkin patch with a petting zoo, train and pony rides, live music, and more!

On Smithsonian Magazine’s annual Museum Day, participating museums and cultural centers offer visitors with Museum Day tickets free admission to view their collections. It’s a free and fun way to spend an autumn afternoon, so why not take advantage of it?
